Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen won the Miss Universe Vietnam 2024 title on the evening of September 14, receiving a prize of two billion VND and a chance to compete internationally. This victory makes her the first beauty to win two major pageants within a decade, following her Miss Vietnam 2014 title.
Receiving the crown from Miss Bui Quynh Hoa, Ky Duyen was visibly emotional. She announced that she would allocate 500 million VND of her prize money to help those in Northern Vietnam recover from natural disasters. Ky Duyen will also represent Vietnam in the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico later this year.
Ky Duyen, 28, hails from Nam Dinh. She stands 1.75 meters tall, weighs 56 kg, and has measurements of 85-59-93 cm. A former student of Hanoi Foreign Trade University, Ky Duyen has been active primarily in the fashion industry, often serving as an opening or leading model on the runway. She has also been invited as a judge and mentor on various shows such as The Look Vietnam 2017, Vietnam Supermodel 2018, Miss Sports 2022, and The Face Vietnam 2023.
During the Miss Universe Vietnam finale, Ky Duyen participated in the evening gown, swimsuit, and interview segments. Each time her name was called by the MC for the top positions, the audience at Phu Tho Gymnasium gave her enthusiastic applause.
In the top 5 interview round, Ky Duyen was asked: "There is a view that talent search competitions in Vietnam lead to a brain drain, as many outstanding individuals who receive scholarships to study abroad rarely return to serve the country. What are your thoughts on this?"
Ky Duyen responded: "I feel happy and proud that many young Vietnamese talents are living abroad... I always support programs and sponsors that offer scholarships for Vietnamese talents to develop internationally. However, for me, brain drain is not too worrying if we continue to nurture and build the talents of our country."
Ky Duyen's victory was anticipated by many viewers. Before the finale, the international beauty pageant website Sash Factor ranked her in first place.
Ky Duyen garnered public attention when she confirmed her participation in the pageant last June. Judges like Thanh Hang and Huong Giang noted that her decision to compete was daring, given her previous titles and position in the entertainment industry.
Initially, she did not make a strong impression, receiving criticism for her English skills and a statement in her speech about never having read an entire book. Later, she clarified that she does read but did not perform well due to nervousness. In the final stages of the competition, she began to shine and was voted by the audience as the Favorite Contestant.
