Over 200 children in Abyei (Africa) participated in singing, dancing, and learning about Vietnam’s Mid-Autumn Festival during a program organized by the blue-helmet peacekeeping force.
The children were trained and performed various Vietnamese cultural performances under the guidance of the Engineering Unit. They also watched videos and cartoons that told the story of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Eastern culture, including the legend of the full moon, the banyan tree, Chu Cuoi (the man in the moon), and Chi Hang (the Moon Lady), all presented in English.
Afterward, the Vietnamese soldiers and the children played traditional folk games and enjoyed treats like candies, jelly, and pumpkin sweet soup. At the end of the event, the Engineering Unit presented gifts to 10 outstanding students who had recently been accepted into university in Abyei and donated five bookshelves, toys, and school supplies to a local church's classroom.
Due to limited resources, members of the Youth Union and the Women's Association of the Engineering Unit repurposed plastic bottles and recycled paper to create toys. As a result, over 200 children in the program received handmade gifts such as lanterns, pinwheels, and bamboo fans crafted by the unit.
In previous peacekeeping missions, the Engineering Unit built three classrooms for local schools, installed clean water systems, screened animated films, and donated books, pens, and food to the schools.
Abyei, an area of 10,546 square kilometers, has been disputed between Sudan and South Sudan since the civil war in 2005. Currently under the control of the Republic of Sudan, the UNISFA mission was established to maintain peace and security and prevent conflict between the two nations.
