General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng (1944-2024)
Comrade Nguyễn Phú Trọng was born on April 14, 1944; his hometown is Đông Hội Commune, Đông Anh District, Hanoi City. He resides at 5 Thiền Quang Street, Nguyễn Du Ward, Hai Bà Trưng District, Hanoi City. He began his work on December 5, 1967, and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 19, 1967.
December 1967: He worked as an officer in the Documentation Department of the Study Journal (now the Communist Party Journal); on December 19, 1967, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam.
August 1968 - August 1973: He was an editor at the Communist Party Journal; conducted fieldwork in Thanh Oai District, Hà Tây Province (now Hanoi); served as Secretary of the Youth Union of the Communist Party Journal office.
September 1973 - April 1976: He was a PhD candidate in Economic - Political Science at the Nguyễn Ái Quốc High-Level Party School (now the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics).
May 1976 - August 1980: He was an editor at the Party Building Department, Communist Party Journal, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee.
September 1980 - August 1981: He studied Russian at the Nguyễn Ái Quốc High-Level Party School.
September 1981 - July 1983: He was a research student and defended his PhD thesis (now a Doctor of History) in Party Building at the Soviet Academy of Social Sciences, under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

August 1996 - February 1998: He served as Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee, also Head of the University Staff Committee and directly managed the Hanoi City Party Committee's Propaganda Department.
At the 4th Conference of the Central Committee of the 8th Party Congress (December 1997), he was elected to the Politburo. He has been a member of the Politburo for the VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII Congresses.

Due to his significant and outstanding contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, he has been honored by the Party and State with the Golden Star Order, the 55-Year Party Membership Medal, and many other prestigious medals and awards from Vietnam and internationally: the "National Gold Medal" from the President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the "Friendship Medal" from the Party and State of the People's Republic of China, the "Lenin Prize," the highest award from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation; the "José Marti Medal" from the Party and State of the Republic of Cuba, and many other high honors.
