According to the latest survey by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), the average airfare for basic economy class on major domestic routes (such as Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi – Da Nang, Hanoi – Cam Ranh/Nha Trang, and Hanoi – Phu Quoc) in the first half of August 2024 ranges from 35% to 65% of the maximum regulated price.
Significant Drop in Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City Route
Specifically, on the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route, the highest fare recorded from Vietnam Airlines is approximately VND 2.2 million per one-way trip, which is 65% of the maximum allowed price of VND 3.4 million (for flights after 5 PM on Friday, August 2nd, right before the weekend).
For other days and departure times, the fares are significantly lower. The lowest fare recorded is from Vietravel Airlines, offering tickets at nearly VND 750,000 per one-way trip, which is 26% of the maximum allowed price (for flights from August 5th to August 15th before 9 AM and after 5 PM).
Similarly, on the high-frequency Hanoi – Da Nang route, the highest fare recorded close to the survey dates (August 1st and 2nd) by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air is about VND 1.6 million per one-way trip, which is approximately 56% of the maximum price of VND 2.89 million (from 9 AM to 5 PM). For departures on other days, fares are substantially reduced, with some days offering fares around 25% of the maximum price. For example, Vietravel Airlines offers fares from nearly VND 300,000 per one-way trip, which is 12% of the maximum price (for flights after 5 PM from August 5th to August 13th).
Other Domestic Routes
On the Hanoi – Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) route, the highest fare recorded on the weekend of August 3rd is nearly VND 2.5 million per one-way trip (72% of the maximum price of VND 3.4 million), provided by Vietnam Airlines during the 9 AM - 5 PM window. For this route, Vietjet Air offers the lowest average fare during several days of the survey period, starting from 25% of the maximum price.
The Hanoi – Da Lat route saw stable prices during the survey period. On August 2nd, Vietnam Airlines offered fares around VND 2.9 million for daytime flights, which is 80% of the maximum price of VND 3.4 million. During other days in the period, fares ranged from 30% to 40% of the maximum price. Vietjet Air offered significantly lower fares throughout the survey period, from VND 800,000 to VND 1.1 million, or 24% to 30% of the maximum price. Bamboo Airways also operates on this route, with fares ranging from 25% to 50% of the maximum price.
For the Hanoi – Phu Quoc route, operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, the maximum regulated price is VND 4 million. The highest fare from Vietnam Airlines is VND 3.05 million, which is 76% of the maximum price (for flights on the morning of August 8th). For other days in the period, both Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet offer fares between 30% and 50% of the maximum price.
Night Flights Offer Lower Prices
Notably, fares for early or late flights on days further out are much lower. Vietnam Airlines offers fares starting from 27% of the maximum price (for August 13th and 14th), while Vietjet Air offers fares starting from 20% of the maximum price (for August 6th to 15th).
Overall, fares vary depending on the departure time. During daytime hours, especially from 9 AM to 12 PM, average fares are higher compared to early morning or late evening hours. This trend reflects passenger preferences for daytime flights, particularly for tourism, which aligns with accommodation booking and travel plans. However, some locations (like Ho Chi Minh City) and travel agencies offer accommodation support for passengers choosing night flights.
According to CAAV, this adjustment allows passengers more options and helps reduce costs for the trip. It also alleviates pressure on airlines during peak daytime hours. High fluctuations in prices when booking close to departure and lower fares for advance bookings are expected trends throughout the year.
CAAV recommends that passengers plan their trips and book tickets early through official channels to secure the best fares. Currently, passengers can also consider arranging their schedules to choose early morning or late night flights to benefit from lower fares.
