The project starts at the border crossing in Lao Cai Province and ends at Lach Huyen Station in Hai Phong City. The main line is approximately 390.9 km long, with branch lines adding another 27.9 km.

The railway passes through 9 provinces and centrally-governed cities: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Hai Phong.

It traverses 37 districts and 153 wards and communes.
