Tà Xùa is currently in the rainy season, with many roads being slippery and prone to landslides. Visitors need to be aware of weather conditions to plan their trips accordingly.

On the morning of August 10, more than 50,000 cubic meters of earth slid down and buried 20 bungalows in Tà Xùa, Bắc Yên District, resulting in one death and two injuries. Ms. Hoa Quỳnh, a guide specializing in travel packages to Tà Xùa, mentioned that she has to cancel and refund all bookings for Tà Xùa until August 30.

Ms. Hoa shared that some homestays are located outside the landslide zone, but she still proactively cancels bookings to ensure maximum safety and avoid causing fear among visitors. According to weather forecasts, Sơn La is expected to experience more rain in the coming days with a risk of landslides. Ms. Hoa provided some safety tips for visitors to ensure their safety when traveling to Tà Xùa.

Traveling to Tà Xùa

Tà Xùa is a mountainous commune in Bắc Yên District, Sơn La, located at an altitude of over 2,800 meters above sea level. The climate here is cool year-round, making it a popular spot for cloud hunting, attracting many visitors.

The road from Hanoi to Bắc Yên Town is paved and easy to travel on, but the road from Bắc Yên to Tà Xùa is a winding mountain road with cliffs on one side. This section is about 13 km long and just wide enough for two vehicles under 16 seats to pass. When it rains, the road becomes more challenging due to mud, rocks, and debris from the mountainside, making it slippery. Many visitors traveling by motorbike may need to dismount and walk through muddy sections.

Travelers should avoid driving directly to Tà Xùa on bad weather days. Instead, they can park their vehicles in Bắc Yên Town and rent a motorbike to continue the journey to Tà Xùa.

If you are not confident in your driving skills, consider hiring a local motorbike taxi due to the steep, narrow, and winding roads.

Best Time to Visit

The summer season coincides with the rainy season, running from April to September, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in July, August, and September. The best time to visit is from October to March, when there is less rain and better opportunities for cloud hunting.

Accommodation

Tà Xùa does not have large hotels or luxury resorts. The area offers homestays and guesthouses, with prices ranging from 200,000 to one million VND per night. Accommodations are primarily located in the central area or nearby, with communal houses (stilt houses) and some private rooms. Some lodgings are situated on high hills, providing easy access to cloud hunting. Rooms are designed as bungalows (one or two floors), separate houses, or stilt houses. However, during heavy rain, it is advisable to avoid accommodations near streams or high locations in the forest due to the risk of landslides.

Currently, many homestays in Tà Xùa are spontaneously set up and not officially registered. Visitors should thoroughly research accommodation options before booking to avoid potential risks.

Given the complex situation of rain, floods, and landslides, the Bắc Yên District People's Committee has instructed Tà Xùa Commune to place warning signs and required homestay owners to commit to not accepting guests and to evacuate areas at risk of landslides.
