Striker Rafaelson, who recently made history by becoming the first player to score over 30 goals in a V. League season, has officially become a Vietnamese citizen, taking the name Nguyen Xuan Son. Rafaelson, originally from Brazil, expressed his joy and pride in achieving his dream of becoming a Vietnamese citizen, stating his love for the country and his commitment to giving his best on the football field. He is now eligible to play as a naturalized player for Nam Dinh FC in their upcoming match against Quang Nam FC.

Rafaelson began his career in Vietnam in early 2020, playing for Nam Dinh, SHB Da Nang, and Binh Dinh before returning to Nam Dinh, where he achieved his record-breaking season in 2023-2024, scoring 31 goals and helping his team win the V. League. His achievements earned him the golden boot and a spot in the season's best squad. Like other foreign players who have naturalized after years of playing in Vietnam, Rafaelson has embraced Vietnam as his second home, bringing his family to live in Nam Dinh and actively learning the language.

There is speculation that coach Kim Sang-sik might consider calling Rafaelson to the national team now that he is a Vietnamese citizen. If selected, Rafaelson would be the first naturalized player without Vietnamese heritage to play for the national team in official tournaments, marking a significant milestone in the country's football history.
